3 Ways to Heal a Cold

How is your week going so far?  I’ve talked with several people who have said they had colds or didn’t feel well, perhaps due to the crazy weather we’ve been having (snow followed a couple days later by 70oF weather here in Virginia)!  I started to come down with a cold last weekend so I’ve been looking up and trying different foods to see which ones help the most.


3 Ways to Heal a Cold


  1. Homemade broth: Broth, especially bone broth, is super healing!   Bone broth contains gelatin, which works as spackle, patching up small holes in the digestive track and reducing inflammation.  Adding spices like cayenne and garlic heat up your core temperature, which helps fight off bacteria and viruses.
  2. Honey-lemon-ginger tea: Raw Honey is antimicrobial (kills off bacteria) and also soothes your sore throat.  Lemons are full of antioxidants and vitamin C and boost your immune system.  Ginger helps soothe your stomach and can stop nausea and vomiting.
  3. IMMUNITY BOOST from Go with Your Gut: I just tried this awesome recipe today from Robyn Youkilis! This drink is designed to hydrate, soothe, and strengthen your gut, which is actually the cornerstone of a healthy immune system.


Immunity Boost Drink



  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 inch fresh turmeric root, grated
  • 1 inch fresh ginger root, grated
  • ½ orange, juiced
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon raw local honey
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper



  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and mix.
  2. Serve and enjoy!


Sleep and hot showers are also very healing for colds.  Take some time to give your body a chance to rest and fully recover.  I completely understand when life gets busy that sleep and nourishment get pushed to the back burner (or even off the stove!). Try going to sleep 5-10 mins earlier than the night before during the week.  By the end of the week, you’re going to sleep 25-50 mins earlier than you were at the beginning of the week!
